Beyond craft
Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 11:23AM This past Saturday, I spent several hours walking the crowded aisles at the American Craft Council Show at Baltimore's Convention Center. Of the over 350 artisans represented, all of whom have to pass muster with a selective jury merely to be allowed to exhibit, the porcelain of Izuki Teraki and Jeanne Bisson, who call their Vermont studio Romulus Craft, took my breath away.
For now, suffice to say that the elemental form, elegant proportions, and exceptional craftsmanship apparent in their work is perhaps the best I've ever seen in contemporary ceramics. You can see for yourself on their website: www.romuluscraft.com, although the photos only hint at the sublime character of their functional ware. I will write at greater length about why I was so moved, and will also take time to do a more careful drawing in an upcoming post.

Scott, that is a fabulous drawing of the mug. Amazing in how you captured both the handle and the glaze. Terrific.
