Susquehanna Pipe Case (1)
Neill Archer Roan, upon seeing the seven day set case I did for Nick Miller, asked me if I'd do another, more involved piece. Nine months and many hours later, this was the stunning result, flawlessly executed by my cabinetmaker friend, Wayne Ritchie. -
Bubinga case and display cradles (3)
Nick Miller of Quality Briar asked me to make a case for a very special seven day collector pipe set, which sold at the Chicago show in June 2011 for an impressive price. Another case, based on this design but taken to even higher levels of refinement and craft, is nearing completion for Neill Archer Roan's "A Passion for Pipes" 283 shape seven day set. -
Mizuki series (3)
Created in 2004 as a speculative project for residential built in cabinetry, and manufactured by Premier Custom-Built in New Holland, PA. In 2009 I developed a free standing series, of which this piece is a prototype. In 2010, Jennifer Gilmer won the NKBA Pinnacle Award for her masterful use of the built-in series in a kitchen. -
Glasgow series (1)
Glasgow was inspired by an observation that Grant Hildebrand, one of my teachers at the University of Washington, made about the thin layers of compositional elements on the facade of a late 19th century commercial building in Seattle. Nearly 20 years later, I put those principles he so eloquently described to work on a much smaller scale. My debt extends to the works of Eliel Saarinen and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. -
Hashigo chair project (6)
This is a speculative project for a ladderback chair. Hashigo means ladder in Japanese, and didn't seem too difficult for western tongues to pronounce. I have yet to take it to the physical prototype level, so it exists only on paper and in AutoCAD .dwg files so far. -
Zoccollo table for Grothouse (4)
In 2009-2010, I worked with Paul Grothouse of Grothouse Lumber (deceptive name for a very high grade manufacturer) helping him to launch his first collection of solid wood kitchen and dining tables. Most of the introductory collection began with concepts from designer Vincent Cappello and were modified and refined into production models by me. -
split leg tripod table series (4)
A table with a component leg adaptable to many configurations, sizes, and heights. Designed in 2010. Not yet named or in production, but engineered for full prototyping.
